DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for maximum sea tides along several coastal areas of Bali, expected to occur between January 1 and January 6, 2026.

The warning was released on Wednesday, December 31, by the BBMKG Wilayah III, which oversees meteorological and maritime monitoring for Bali and surrounding regions.

Head of BBMKG Region III, Cahyo Nugroho, explained that the potential for maximum tides is driven by astronomical factors, specifically the Perigee phase, when the Moon is at its closest distance to Earth, on January 2, 2026, followed by a full moon on January 3, 2026. The combination of these two phenomena may significantly increase maximum sea water levels in coastal areas.

“These astronomical conditions can lead to higher-than-normal sea levels in several coastal regions of Bali,” Nugroho said.

According to BMKG, coastal areas potentially affected include the southern coast of Tabanan Regency, the coast of Badung Regency, coastal areas of Denpasar City, Gianyar Regency, the southern coast of Klungkung Regency, the southern coast of Karangasem Regency, and the southern coast of Jembrana Regency.

BMKG noted that the timing of potential coastal flooding, commonly known as tidal flooding or rob, may vary between locations, both in terms of day and hour. The elevated sea levels could disrupt daily activities in coastal and port areas, including loading and unloading operations at ports, activities in coastal settlements, as well as salt farming and inland fisheries.

In response, BMKG has urged residents and those working in coastal zones to remain alert and take precautionary measures to anticipate possible impacts from maximum tides.

“People living or carrying out activities in coastal areas are advised to increase vigilance and preparedness,” the agency stated.

BMKG also encouraged the public to continuously monitor the latest maritime and weather updates through official BMKG channels, including BBMKG Region III information services, the official BMKG website, social media platforms, and the Info BMKG mobile application.

The early warning was issued as part of mitigation efforts to reduce potential risks, losses, and disruptions caused by maximum sea tides during the early days of January 2026.
