KLUNGKUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – Coastal erosion along Monggalan Beach in Kusamba Village, Dawan District, Klungkung Regency, has become increasingly severe, affecting at least 12 households and forcing several families to leave their homes due to safety concerns.

Local authorities confirmed that four families have been displaced after losing their homes and having no alternative accommodation in their original village. The erosion has continued since last year and has worsened in recent weeks following strong waves and extreme weather conditions.

Klungkung Deputy Regent Tjokorda Gde Surya Putra visited the affected area on Thursday (29 January 2026), accompanied by the head of the Klungkung Social Affairs and Women and Child Protection Office. During the visit, officials inspected damaged houses along the Monggalan Beach coastline.

Several homes have suffered extensive damage, including collapsed walls and roofs swept away by seawater. In some cases, waves have reached residential yards, raising serious concerns about residents’ safety.

During the inspection, the deputy regent distributed emergency assistance to affected residents, including basic food supplies and household items such as mattresses, blankets, and clothing. The Klungkung Regency Government has previously proposed the construction of a coastal barrier to the River Basin Authority (BWS) as a mitigation measure.

However, studies by the authority indicated that building a seawall could shift erosion risks to eastern areas. As a result, relocation has been recommended for residents living in the most vulnerable zones.

“Moving forward, together with the regent, we will work to find a solution and ensure that homes affected by coastal erosion receive proper handling as soon as possible,” Tjokorda Surya Putra said.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant amid ongoing extreme weather, including heavy rain and strong winds. Village authorities have been instructed to conduct detailed data collection on affected families, including those who still have accommodation elsewhere and those who are fully displaced.

Kusamba Village head I Nengah Semadi Adnyana confirmed that seawater intrusion has reached residential areas, prompting fears of further damage and potential danger to residents.

“A total of 12 households have been affected. Around four families no longer have a place to stay in their original village and have relocated to safer locations,” he said.

Local officials expressed appreciation for the response from the Klungkung Regency Government and voiced hope that planned mitigation measures and relocation efforts can be implemented smoothly to protect residents from further coastal damage.
