DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – The Denpasar City Disaster Management Agency (BPBD Denpasar) has installed flood early warning systems (EWS) at eight strategic locations across the city to strengthen preparedness amid the ongoing rainy season.

The systems have been placed at several dams and river monitoring points, including Mertagangga Dam in Ubung, Sempol Dam on Tukad Badung, Dadas Dam on South Mahendradata Street, Umadui Dam on Gunung Soputan Street, Lange Dam on Tukad Lange in Monang Maning, Tukad Rangda near Pemelisan Street on the Ngurah Rai Bypass, Buagan Dam in Banjar Buagan, and the bridge connecting Badung Market and Kumbasari Market.

Denpasar BPBD Secretary Anak Agung Surya Kencana said the early warning systems are designed to monitor water levels in real time, particularly during heavy rainfall.

“We monitor water discharge at each dam during rainfall through our operations control center,” Surya Kencana said on Wednesday, 17 December 2025.

In the Badung Market area, BPBD is currently completing the installation of an alert system equipped with loudspeakers.
“If water levels rise, warnings will be broadcast through loudspeakers to alert people to remain on standby,” he explained.

He added that if water overflows, an alarm system will be activated.
“This feature is still in progress due to electricity-related constraints,” Surya Kencana noted.

Emergency Teams on Standby

BPBD Denpasar Head IB Joni Ariwibawa said the agency remains on full alert as Bali enters the peak of the rainy season.

“We maintain daily readiness of our rapid response teams, ambulances, and operations center,” he said.

BPBD has also prepared equipment such as chainsaws and water pumps to respond to hydrometeorological disasters. Coordination is being carried out with the fire department (Damkar), Environmental Agency (DLHK), Public Works Agency (PUPR), village administrations, Denpasar Police, and the Indonesian Military (Kodim).

Drainage Improvements and River Dredging

Denpasar Mayor IGN Jaya Negara said the city government has intensified drainage maintenance and waterway flushing to reduce flood risks.

“We have repaired and improved drainage systems. Sedimentation caused by ongoing development has been addressed as much as possible,” he said.

The city is also coordinating closely with BMKG to monitor weather developments and has prepared emergency response units to handle potential flooding.

In addition, sediment dredging has been carried out along several rivers, including Tukad Badung and Tukad Loloan, as part of broader flood mitigation efforts.
