GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – A fire gutted the Tanatap tourism accommodation complex on Monkey Forest Road in Ubud, Gianyar, Bali, on Sunday morning (December 28, 2025). No injuries or fatalities were reported, but material losses are estimated to reach several billion rupiah.
Tanatap is a multi-purpose tourism venue offering restaurant services, sauna facilities, yoga, and pilates. The three-storey building, which largely used wooden and natural materials, had been operating for only around two months and was reportedly popular with visitors.
Tanatap manager Amade said he was not at the location when the fire broke out. Based on information he received, the fire is believed to have originated from the sauna furnace on the ground floor before spreading rapidly through the wooden structure.
“The fire started from the sauna furnace and spread to the wooden materials. Suddenly it grew large. There are a coffee bar, kitchen, yoga and pilates rooms. The place had only been operating for two months. I arrived when the building was already on fire,” he said.
A nearby resident, Wahyuni, who owns a house adjacent to the site, said she noticed thick smoke while cooking at home. After checking the source, she found Tanatap staff in a state of panic and urged them to immediately contact the fire department.
Together with other residents, she attempted to extinguish the fire using tap water, but the limited water pressure made the effort unsuccessful. “We tried to help with neighbors, but we couldn’t because the fire was already large at the back,” she said.
Firefighters from the Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service received the report at 07:38 WITA and initially deployed a unit from the Ubud post. Due to the scale of the fire and the flammable materials involved, additional units from Payangan, the main Gianyar post, and Sukawati were dispatched. In total, nine fire engines and one pickup truck were deployed.
Head of the Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service I Putu Yudanegara, accompanied by Fire Operations Division Head I Putu Pradana, said the fire was difficult to control.
“When our team first arrived, flames were not clearly visible from the outside. However, a large fire was burning in the rear section. Fortunately, we managed to prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings,” he said.
Fire officials confirmed that the most severe damage occurred on the first floor, particularly in the sauna area, which is believed to be the initial source of the fire.
Ubud Police Chief I Wayan Putra Antara stated that no casualties were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as police were unable to conduct a full scene examination while firefighters were still carrying out cooling operations at around 09:35 WITA.
