GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – The Gianyar Regency Government has officially opened its first traditional painting exhibition as part of the 255th anniversary celebrations of Gianyar and the ongoing Gianyar Cultural Week.

The exhibition, launched on Thursday (April 2, 2026) at the Monkey Forest Gallery in Ubud, marks a milestone as the first traditional art exhibition organized directly by the local government.

Head of Gianyar Cultural Office, I Wayan Adi Parbawa, said the initiative reflects the regency’s commitment to prioritizing cultural development as a core pillar of regional growth.

“This exhibition is not just about showcasing artworks, but a real effort to preserve ancestral heritage rich in philosophical and spiritual values. We want to provide space for artists while educating younger generations to appreciate traditional art,” he said during the opening.

The exhibition carries the theme “Gianyar Bhuwana Sumedhya Nityan Rahayu,” which represents a vision of Gianyar continuing to grow in prosperity while maintaining cultural sustainability.

Curator Prof. Dr. I Wayan Suardana explained that the theme emphasizes continuity rather than separation from tradition, describing Gianyar’s painting tradition as a “living archive” that reflects both change and preservation.

A total of 92 artists initially registered for the exhibition. Following a selection process conducted by the curatorial team, 70 painters were chosen to present their works.

The selected participants represent all seven districts in Gianyar, with representation based on artistic quality and curatorial criteria.

Authorities expect the exhibition to strengthen connections among artists while also supporting the growth of the creative economy in Gianyar, widely recognized as one of Bali’s main art centers.

The event is open to the public as part of a broader cultural program celebrating Gianyar’s heritage and artistic identity.
