BADUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – A tectonic earthquake shook parts of Kuta early Tuesday morning (February 17) at 03:23 WITA, coinciding with Lunar New Year celebrations observed by members of the Chinese community.

According to the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Region III Denpasar, Cahyo Nugroho, the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.3.

The epicenter was located at coordinates 9.32° South Latitude and 114.71° East Longitude, approximately 81 kilometers southwest of South Kuta, Badung, at a depth of 37 kilometers beneath the seabed.

“Based on the epicenter location and hypocenter depth, the earthquake was a shallow tectonic event caused by activity along an active fault beneath the sea. Source mechanism analysis indicates a thrust fault movement,” Cahyo said in a written statement.

Community reports indicated that the tremor was felt in Kuta and South Kuta at an intensity of II on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, meaning it was felt by several people and caused light objects hanging indoors to sway.

As of the latest update, there have been no reports of damage resulting from the earthquake.

BMKG’s tsunami modeling based on the tectonic source confirmed that the earthquake did not have the potential to generate a tsunami.
