KARANGASEM, DEWATA.NEWS – Hiking activity to the summit of Mount Agung has dropped sharply during the current rainy season, with a decline estimated at around 70 percent, according to local guides.
Mangku Kayun, a Mount Agung guide operating on the Edelweiss route, said the number of climbers has fallen significantly compared to normal conditions. “On weekends, we usually see up to 100 climbers. Now it’s only around 15 to 30 people,” he said.
The decline is largely attributed to weather conditions, as many climbers reconsider their plans due to safety and comfort concerns during the rainy season. Kayun explained that wet and slippery terrain increases risks and requires more careful preparation.
“Climbing in the rainy season needs extra readiness, such as layered raincoats, spare clothing, and basic medication,” he said. He added that following guidance and safety procedures remains essential. “If climbers follow instructions, it can still be safe, but muscle cramps are more common during the rainy season,” he noted.
The Edelweiss route remains one of the preferred trails for climbers heading to Mount Agung. However, guides continue to enforce strict rules to maintain safety. Kayun emphasized that Mount Agung is not only challenging in terms of terrain but also holds deep spiritual significance.
“This mountain is highly sacred, and there are customary rules that must be respected. Safety and respect for these values are our priority,” he said.
Authorities and local guides continue to advise climbers to carefully consider weather conditions before attempting the ascent and to ensure they are physically prepared and properly equipped.
