Fire damage is visible at the Tanatap tourism accommodation on Monkey Forest Road, Ubud, after a blaze believed to have started in the sauna area severely affected the three-storey building.

GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Further details have emerged regarding the fire that severely damaged the Tanatap tourism accommodation on Monkey Forest Road, Padangtegal Village, Ubud, on Sunday morning (December 28, 2025). Authorities say the blaze is believed to have originated from the sauna area on the ground floor of the building.

The three-storey accommodation, which had been operating for approximately two months, was almost entirely destroyed by the fire. While no casualties were reported, material losses are estimated to reach several billion rupiah.

Based on witness accounts and information from the management, the incident occurred when the surrounding area was still relatively quiet. At around 07:38 WITA, thick smoke was first seen rising from the rear section of the Tanatap building.

A nearby resident, Wahyuni, whose house is located directly next to the site, said she was cooking at home when she noticed dense smoke coming from the direction of the Tanatap restaurant. After checking the source, she found staff members already in a state of panic.

“People tried to help, but it wasn’t possible because the fire at the back was already large,” Wahyuni said, explaining that initial attempts to extinguish the fire using tap water were unsuccessful due to low water pressure and the rapid spread of flames.

Tanatap manager Amade said he was not at the location when the fire intensified and only received information after the incident began. According to reports he received, the fire first appeared in the sauna furnace on the first floor before quickly spreading to the wooden materials that dominate the building’s structure.

“The fire started from the sauna furnace and spread rapidly to the wooden materials. It suddenly grew and reached the coffee bar, kitchen, yoga room, and pilates area,” he explained.

Firefighting units from the Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service were immediately deployed from the Ubud post. Due to the scale of the fire and the flammable nature of the building materials, additional units from Payangan, the Gianyar main post, and Sukawati were also dispatched.

Head of the Gianyar Fire and Rescue Service I Putu Yudanegara said a total of nine fire engines were deployed, supported by one pickup vehicle. “From the outside, large flames were not immediately visible, but the fire at the rear had already intensified. Our focus was to prevent it from spreading to neighboring buildings,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fire Operations Division Head I Putu Pradana confirmed that the most severe damage occurred on the ground floor, consistent with reports that the fire originated in the sauna area.

Fire suppression and cooling operations continued until at least 09:24 WITA to ensure no remaining hotspots. Ubud Police Chief I Wayan Putra Antara confirmed that there were no injuries or fatalities.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as police were unable to conduct a full scene examination while cooling operations were still ongoing. The affected area has been secured with police lines, and activity along Monkey Forest Road was temporarily disrupted during the emergency response.
