DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Operations at Benoa Port in Denpasar have returned to normal following a full-day suspension during Nyepi, Bali’s annual Day of Silence, observed on March 19–20, 2026.
The temporary closure was implemented in accordance with a circular issued by the Benoa Port Authority (KSOP Class II Benoa), halting all port activities from 06:00 WITA on Thursday (March 19) until 06:00 WITA on Friday (March 20). During this period, no operational activities were permitted as part of island-wide observance of Catur Brata Penyepian.
General Manager of Pelindo Benoa Port, Agung Mataram, confirmed that the suspension covered all core port functions, including ship docking and departures, passenger embarkation and disembarkation, cargo handling, and other operational services. Administrative services at the port authority office were also paused.
Additional restrictions were applied to vessels docked at the port. Crew members were not allowed to disembark or create disturbances such as noise, lighting, or fireworks that could disrupt the solemnity of Nyepi. However, ship captains and crews remained responsible for maintaining vessel safety and coordinating with authorities in case of emergencies.
“Pelindo fully respects the observance of Nyepi as part of Bali’s local wisdom. Operational adjustments are carried out with a focus on safety, security, and the continuity of port services,” Agung stated.
The operational pause coincided with increased travel activity ahead of the Eid al-Fitr 2026 holiday, particularly for departures to destinations in the Nusa Tenggara region. Benoa Port had already experienced a rise in passenger traffic prior to Nyepi, reflecting growing mobility during the holiday period.
As one of Bali’s key maritime gateways, Benoa Port also handles international cruise ship arrivals. Authorities noted that cruise schedules had been carefully arranged to align with the Nyepi period, ensuring that tourism activities continue without disrupting local traditions.
Pelindo emphasized that coordination with port authorities, shipping operators, and other stakeholders played a critical role in ensuring that operations could resume smoothly after Nyepi while maintaining respect for local customs.
For travelers and logistics operators, the temporary shutdown highlights the importance of planning around Nyepi, when transportation and public activities across Bali are strictly limited.
