GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Authorities in Gianyar have launched an investigation after a foreign tourist was caught on camera allegedly taking donation money from a sacred temple site, triggering public concern online.

The incident took place at Pura Budha Goa Gajah in Bedulu Village, Blahbatuh District, a well-known cultural and religious site visited by both locals and tourists.

Police confirmed that the case came to light following the circulation of a video on social media showing the suspected act. Officers from Blahbatuh Police Station under Gianyar Police have since conducted an on-site investigation.

“We confirm that the incident occurred. The suspected perpetrator is a foreign tourist recorded on CCTV taking donation money from a temple offering box,” said Police Public Relations Officer Ipda Gusti Ngurah Suardita on Sunday (April 26).

Temple management reported financial losses estimated at IDR 1.8 million, consisting of a mix of Indonesian rupiah and foreign currencies previously donated by visitors.

Police are currently working to identify the suspect by analyzing CCTV footage, gathering witness statements, and tracing potential movements in nearby tourist areas.

Authorities also issued a reminder to managers of temples and tourist attractions across Gianyar to strengthen security measures.

“We urge managers of sacred sites and tourist destinations to increase vigilance, optimize CCTV systems, and conduct regular monitoring to ensure safety and maintain Bali’s tourism image,” Suardita added.
