GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – A major section of Jalan Raya Ubud, one of Bali’s primary tourism access routes, was fully closed on Thursday afternoon (December 18, 2025) after the road surface collapsed in Banjar Ambengan, Peliatan Village, Ubud District, causing significant disruption to traffic heading to and from Ubud.

The closure was enforced after authorities determined the damage posed a serious risk to road users. Police sealed off the affected area to prevent vehicles from crossing the compromised section.

The incident was triggered by heavy rainfall that had been affecting Gianyar since midday. The intense rain caused a surge in underground water flow, which gradually eroded the road’s foundation before leading to a full collapse.

“The excessive water volume caused the road to fail. Initially the damage was minor, but continuous vibrations from passing vehicles widened the cracks,” said Saiful, a local resident who witnessed the incident.

Prompt action by officers from Ubud Police helped prevent casualties. Police immediately installed safety barriers and enforced a total road closure. As a result, vehicles traveling toward Ubud’s main tourism areas, as well as traffic exiting Ubud, are currently not permitted to use the route.

Local Government Prepares Traffic Diversions

Responding to the situation, Gianyar Regional Secretary I Gusti Bagus Adi Widya Utama said the local government’s immediate priority is to prevent severe traffic congestion across the Ubud area.

“We have coordinated with the Transportation Agency and the local police to simulate traffic management. Starting tomorrow morning, traffic flows will be adjusted. This may include converting one-way roads into two-way routes or applying other temporary schemes,” he said during an on-site inspection.

In parallel, the Gianyar Public Works Agency (PU) has carried out a technical assessment at the collapse site. Temporary structural measures are planned to stabilize the area.

“The Public Works team has conducted an inspection. The plan is to install supporting piles as an initial measure. Our hope is that at least one lane can be reopened as soon as possible to support mobility for residents and tourists,” Adi Widya Utama added.

As of publication, traffic remains diverted to alternative routes, and both residents and visitors are advised to follow official directions and remain cautious, especially during ongoing rainy conditions.
