The burial was carried out on Saturday (February 28, 2026) at approximately 13:30 WITA at the public cemetery of Kampung Toya Pakeh Village, Klungkung Regency.
Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya said the decision to bury the unidentified remains was based on moral and humanitarian considerations.
“This was carried out as a form of moral and humanitarian responsibility. The National Police ensure that every body is treated humanely,” Kesuma Jaya stated.
He added that forensic identification procedures had been conducted to anticipate the possibility of family members coming forward in the future.
“Forensic identification has been performed to anticipate the possibility of relatives searching at a later time,” he said.
The burial ceremony was led by Kesuma Jaya and involved 15 personnel from Nusa Penida Police. Four medical staff from Gema Shanti Nusa Penida Hospital were also present, along with the head of Kampung Toya Pakeh Village, local community members, and village officials who provided the burial site.
The remains were initially discovered by residents on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) at around 17:00 WITA along the shoreline in front of Rumah Marta, Dusun Ceningan, Lembongan Village, Nusa Penida District.
Two residents, identified as I Putu Agus Oka Leo Pratama and I Putu Ngurah Andika Andimada, reported detecting a strong odor while at the beach. Upon approaching an object washed ashore, they realized it was a human body.
Police and medical personnel from Gema Shanti Hospital subsequently evacuated the remains for further handling.
Initial coordination with local residents indicated that no missing persons had been reported in the area. Authorities suspect the body may have been carried by ocean currents before washing ashore.
Due to the condition of the remains, it has not yet been determined whether the body belonged to a male or female individual.
The case remains open should further identification information emerge.
