DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Bali Police have named a Swiss national, identified as LAZ, as a suspect following an offensive social media post targeting Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence.
The individual, who operates the Instagram account @luzzysun, was investigated after posting a story containing explicit language directed at Nyepi observance and local rules. Authorities confirmed the suspect is being processed under allegations related to offenses against religion and belief.
The case has drawn attention from local religious leaders. Bali chapter chairman of the Indonesian Hindu Dharma Council (PHDI), I Nyoman Kenak, expressed support for the legal action.
“I highly appreciate the steps taken by law enforcement. This constitutes religious harassment and must be handled firmly. We fully entrust the process to the authorities and legal experts,” he said on Sunday (March 22, 2026).
Kenak also highlighted concerns over inappropriate social media activity during Nyepi, including live broadcasts that were widely discussed online. He noted that such behavior is considered unethical, particularly when carried out by individuals who are expected to respect the religious observance.
“Such actions are deeply regrettable. As members of society, especially Hindus, we should respect Nyepi. We leave it to law enforcement to take appropriate legal action,” he added.
Authorities indicated that while some violations fall under social norms and may be addressed through community guidance by traditional villages, cases involving legal breaches including offensive online content, are being handled through formal legal channels.
Despite isolated incidents, officials noted that the overall Nyepi observance this year proceeded smoothly. Key stages of the celebration, including Melasti, Tawur, Nyepi Day, and Ngembak Geni, were carried out in an orderly and respectful manner.
Local authorities also expressed appreciation to both Hindu and non-Hindu communities for supporting the peaceful implementation of Nyepi across the island.
For international visitors, the case underscores the importance of respecting local customs and religious observances while in Bali, particularly during significant cultural events such as Nyepi.
