KARANGASEM, DEWATA.NEWS – A minor earthquake struck the Karangasem area in Bali on Monday (March 23, 2026) at 12:19:45 WITA, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
The earthquake measured magnitude 2.7, with its epicenter located on land approximately 23 kilometers southeast of Karangasem at a depth of 12 kilometers.
Head of BMKG Region III Denpasar, Cahyo Nugroho, explained that based on the epicenter location and depth, the quake was classified as a shallow earthquake triggered by activity along an active fault beneath the seabed. “Considering the epicenter and hypocenter depth, this was a shallow earthquake caused by active fault movement,” he stated.
Based on shakemap analysis and public reports, the tremor was felt at intensity levels II–III MMI in parts of Karangasem. Residents reported light shaking, including slight movement of hanging objects and vibrations noticeable inside homes.
As of the latest update, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake. BMKG also confirmed that the event does not pose any tsunami risk. “Tsunami modeling indicates that this earthquake has no potential to trigger a tsunami,” Cahyo added.
Monitoring data up to 12:31 WITA showed no signs of aftershocks.
For residents and visitors, authorities advise remaining calm while staying informed through official BMKG updates, especially in areas prone to seismic activity.
