GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Police in Ubud have arrested a 28-year-old man accused of stealing professional camera equipment worth approximately IDR 50 million from a guest staying at a lodging house in central Ubud.

The suspect, identified by the initials AM, was detained by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Ubud Police after officers linked him to the theft through CCTV footage and field investigation.

Ubud Police Chief Kompol I Wayan Putra Antara confirmed the arrest on Friday, May 15, 2026, stating that the investigation began after a report from the victim, Fikri Muhammad (31), a university student from South Jakarta.

The theft occurred on Monday, March 9, 2026, at a guesthouse identified as Patra House in Gang Soka, Taman Kelod area, Ubud.

According to police, the victim discovered that a Nikon D850 camera along with several accessories had disappeared from Room No. 3 at around 7:30 p.m. WITA.

Investigators said the suspect allegedly entered the room through an open window while the victim was outside the property.

Security camera footage from the accommodation reportedly captured the suspect entering and leaving the room carrying the victim’s belongings.

The stolen items included a Nikon D850 camera body, an AF-S Nikkor 28-300 mm lens, a camera adapter, and a Nikon battery.

Following an investigation and witness questioning, officers identified the suspect based on CCTV recordings. On May 12, 2026, police officers conducting patrols on Jalan Raya Ubud spotted a man matching the suspect’s description.

After being questioned on site, AM allegedly admitted to the theft and directed officers to the location where the equipment had been stored.

All stolen items have since been recovered and secured as evidence at Ubud Police headquarters.

“This successful investigation reflects our commitment to providing a sense of security for the community. We urge residents and visitors to remain vigilant and ensure windows and doors are securely closed when leaving rooms,” Kompol Putra Antara said.

Police said the suspect is being charged under Indonesia’s aggravated theft provisions, which carry a maximum prison sentence of seven years.

Authorities also stated that AM is not a repeat offender and remains under further investigation as police complete administrative and legal procedures related to the case.
