KLUNGKUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – Australian athlete Rhiannan Iffland and British diver Aidan Heslop secured first place at the opening round of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2026, held at Bali’s iconic Broken Beach in Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency.

The international extreme sports competition took place from 20–23 May 2026, marking Indonesia’s debut as host of the world-renowned cliff diving series.

Athletes performed high-difficulty dives from heights of 27 meters for the men’s category and 21 meters for the women’s category, with the Indian Ocean serving as the dramatic natural backdrop.

Nine-time defending women’s champion Rhiannan Iffland from Australia opened the 2026 season with a total score of 345.55 points in Bali. Canadian diver Molly Carlson finished second with 329.7 points, followed by Switzerland’s Morgane Herculano in third place with 307.8 points.

In the men’s division, Britain’s Aidan Heslop delivered one of the standout performances of the event, collecting 419.85 points to win the “Gates of Heaven” trophy.

Mexico’s Jonathan Paredes finished second with 379.7 points, while American diver James Lichtenstein placed third with 371.2 points.

“It’s about pushing the limits as far as possible and going beyond them. It’s about doing something that has never been done before, and that’s why I love doing this,” Heslop said after the competition.

The 24-year-old athlete made a successful return after an 18-month absence caused by injury and back surgery. His last appearance came in November 2024, when he won the world title in Sydney.

At Broken Beach, Heslop impressed judges early with scores of 9 during the second round before taking the lead with his third dive from the 27-meter platform.

He secured victory with a final dive carrying a difficulty rating of 5.9, featuring four forward somersaults and three-and-a-half twist pike rotations, earning 141.6 points and finishing nearly 40 points ahead of his competitors.

“I felt happiness and relief at the same time after the final dive. I even cried when I was lifted from the water by the jet ski because this moment meant so much to me,” Heslop said.

The competition required extensive safety measures due to the extreme diving heights and challenging ocean conditions at Broken Beach, including waves, wind direction, and strong sea currents.

To support safety operations, the Indonesian Navy deployed rescue divers, helicopters, and several maritime units throughout the event.

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali said one naval ship, two helicopters, Kopaska special forces personnel, and diving teams were placed on standby for emergency response and medical evacuation if necessary.

“Fortunately, no unwanted incidents occurred during the competition,” he stated after the trophy ceremony.

He added that Indonesia’s successful hosting of the event demonstrated the country’s readiness to develop international sports tourism, particularly in maritime destinations.

Sports Director of Red Bull Cliff Diving Orlando Duque said Bali was selected because it combines spectacular natural scenery with accessibility for spectators.

“We look for locations that are close to the people and close to the action. Bali offers a very unique combination,” he said.

Alongside the competition, athletes were also introduced to Balinese culture through traditional activities such as canang sari making, batik workshops, purification rituals, rindik music performances, and barong dance presentations at the venue.

Following the Bali opener, the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2026 will continue in the United States, Denmark, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Italy, and Oman.
