KLUNGKUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – A Danish tourist died after returning from a snorkeling trip in the waters of Nusa Penida, Bali, with police saying the preliminary findings point to a suspected heart attack.

The victim, identified by the initials AKL, 42, was found unconscious at Samah Nusa Lembongan Villa in Lembongan Village, Nusa Penida District, on Monday (June 29) at around 11:30 a.m. WITA.

According to Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, the tourist had been snorkeling in the waters around Nusa Penida before returning to his accommodation.

“Based on witness statements, the victim had earlier been snorkeling in the waters of Nusa Penida,” Kesuma said on Tuesday (June 30).

Police said the incident began shortly after AKL returned from the sea. Upon arriving at the villa, he complained of shortness of breath and said he was feeling unwell.

Moments later, the Danish national collapsed and lost consciousness. Accommodation staff and his companions immediately attempted to provide first aid before arranging emergency transport to East Medical Lembongan Clinic.

“Upon arrival at the clinic, the victim was pronounced dead,” Kesuma said.

After receiving the report, officers from Nusa Penida Police visited the scene to conduct an initial investigation and interview witnesses.

A preliminary external examination by medical personnel found no signs of violence or physical assault on the victim’s body.

Police believe the man most likely died from a sudden heart attack after physical activity in the sea, although further administrative procedures are continuing.

The body has since been transferred from Nusa Penida to Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar for further handling.

“The victim’s family has accepted his passing and declined an autopsy,” Kesuma added.

Police have not reported any indication of criminal activity in connection with the incident.
