KARANGASEM, DEWATA.NEWS – Yeh Malet Lake in Manggis, Karangasem Regency, has begun a normalization and cleanup process after authorities raised concerns over sediment buildup and the spread of invasive aquatic plants that have increasingly degraded the lake’s condition.
The restoration effort was initiated by Korem 163/Wirasatya as part of activities marking its 65th anniversary. Commander Brigadier General Ida Idewa Agung Hadisaputra said the program reflects the Indonesian military’s commitment not only to defense duties, but also to environmental protection and community welfare.
“This anniversary is not meant to be merely ceremonial,” Hadisaputra said on Sunday, January 25, 2026. “We want to provide real benefits for the community, one of which is helping to save Yeh Malet Lake.”
He explained that the normalization work is being carried out with no other interest beyond restoring water resources and reviving the lake’s ecosystem, which plays an important role in the daily lives of surrounding communities.
“There is no other agenda. This is purely about restoring nature, protecting water sources, and improving the surrounding environment. If the lake is healthy, the benefits will return to the community,” he said.
According to Korem 163/Wirasatya, sediment deposits and the rapid growth of water hyacinth covering the lake’s surface have threatened its ecological function. Cleanup activities are being conducted in stages to gradually restore the lake so it can once again serve as an environmental buffer and potentially as a nature-based recreational area.
Karangasem Regent I Gusti Putu Parwata, also known as Gus Par, expressed full support for the initiative, stating that the military’s involvement aligns with the local government’s environmental conservation goals.
“This is a joint commitment between the regional government and Korem 163/Wirasatya to improve environmental conditions,” he said. “Once the lake is clean, the community can make better use of Yeh Malet Lake. We hope this normalization becomes a starting point for broader water ecosystem recovery in Karangasem.”
