DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Authorities in Denpasar have intensified rabies vaccination efforts after one confirmed rabies-positive dog case was recorded in West Denpasar at the beginning of 2026. As of early February, vaccination coverage among rabies-transmitting animals remains low, reaching only 2.48 percent of the total dog population.
Head of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health at the Denpasar Agriculture Office, veterinarian Ni Made Suparmi, said mass vaccination efforts officially began in early February and are being carried out through door-to-door visits across the city.
Speaking on Saturday (7/2) during a vaccination event held alongside the Tumpek Uye celebration at Lumintang City Park, she said public spaces are also being used to accelerate coverage.
“Vaccination has been ongoing since February 3, including here at Lumintang City Park, as part of efforts to increase rabies vaccination coverage,” Suparmi said.
According to official data, Denpasar is home to an estimated 84,369 dogs in 2026. The largest populations are in South Denpasar with 25,065 dogs, followed by North Denpasar with 23,277, West Denpasar with 18,806, and East Denpasar with 17,221.
Since the campaign began, 2,094 dogs have been vaccinated, representing 2.48 percent of the total population. Vaccinations have been carried out across all four districts, including 410 dogs in West Denpasar, 730 in South Denpasar, 395 in East Denpasar, and 559 in North Denpasar.
Suparmi said the city is targeting a vaccination coverage rate of 92 percent this year, an increase from 2025, when Denpasar exceeded its target with 91.2 percent coverage. Vaccination schedules for February have already been distributed to villages and sub-districts to ensure wider participation.
Officials hope the intensified campaign will prevent further rabies cases in animals and avoid transmission to humans. “We conduct annual revaccination. By increasing coverage, we aim to suppress rabies cases in animals and ensure there are no human cases,” Suparmi said.
