BADUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – The Badung Regency Government is moving forward with plans to develop a tram system connecting Kuta and Canggu as part of a long-term strategy to tackle worsening traffic congestion in Bali’s busiest tourism corridor.
The proposal was discussed during a meeting between Badung Regent I Wayan Adi Arnawa and executives from state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).
According to Adi Arnawa, an integrated public transportation network is essential to addressing congestion while improving the quality of tourism in Badung. He said rail-based transport would provide a more effective long-term solution than relying solely on expanding road capacity.
“Besides toll roads, developing rail connectivity is far more effective. Dedicated rail corridors will be included along major roads in Badung. This concept is also planned for the Nusa Dua area and Kuta Central Parking,” Adi Arnawa said.
The proposed Kuta–Canggu tram line is designed to be integrated with the regency’s ongoing road infrastructure projects. New roads are planned with a width of up to 24 meters, allowing space for dedicated tram tracks alongside vehicle lanes.
As part of the project, the Badung Government also plans to develop a one-hectare park-and-ride facility at Kuta Central Parking. Visitors and residents traveling by private vehicle would park there before continuing their journey by tram.
Officials believe the system would help eliminate on-street parking along Kuta’s busy roads, allowing traffic to flow more efficiently while encouraging greater use of public transportation.
The regency hopes close cooperation between the local government, the central government, and PT KAI will accelerate the development of a modern, safe, and reliable public transport network.
Badung Transportation Agency Head Anak Agung Gde Rahmadi confirmed that his office accompanied the regent during discussions with PT KAI regarding the proposed tram project.
He explained that while the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR) will oversee construction and engineering, the Transportation Agency will be responsible for traffic management and future operational aspects.
Rahmadi said the tram is expected to become a key component of Badung’s broader strategy to reduce congestion, complementing existing traffic engineering and road management measures.
Before construction begins, the transportation agency will ensure the project is supported by comprehensive studies on local traffic conditions and the characteristics of the surrounding areas.
“The Badung Transportation Agency fully supports the Regent’s plan to develop this integrated public transportation system,” Rahmadi said.
