KARANGASEM, DEWATA.NEWS – Hotel occupancy in Karangasem remains subdued in April 2026, prompting tourism stakeholders to explore alternative ways to boost visitor numbers, including leveraging a newly introduced fast boat route connecting Senggigi in Lombok to Padangbai in Bali.
Current hotel occupancy levels in the region are reported to be between 35 and 45 percent, reflecting ongoing challenges linked to reduced international arrivals, particularly from Europe.
Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Karangasem, I Wayan Kariasa, said on Tuesday (April 14, 2026) that the new sea route offers a potential solution amid disruptions to international air travel caused by geopolitical tensions.
“With many flights being affected, routes like Senggigi–Padangbai can become an alternative. It may not fully replace the European market, but at least it helps maintain tourist movement,” he said.
The new connectivity allows easier access for domestic and regional travelers from Lombok to reach eastern Bali, including Karangasem. Padangbai has long served as a key entry point to the region, and the addition of a direct fast boat service is expected to improve travel efficiency.
Tourism operators have begun to notice a modest increase in visitor movement, particularly among domestic travelers and regional backpackers who prefer more flexible and cost-effective transport options.
However, the impact on hotel occupancy remains limited. Many travelers using the fast boat route tend to stay for shorter durations or treat Karangasem as a transit point, unlike European tourists who typically stay longer.
“It helps, but it has not significantly increased occupancy. At least there is movement, and it is not completely stagnant,” Kariasa added.
Industry players see longer-term potential in the Senggigi–Padangbai route as part of a broader Bali–Lombok tourism integration strategy. Cross-island travel packages are being considered to attract more visitors, particularly from Asian and domestic markets.
With hotel occupancy still below 50 percent as of mid-April, the fast boat connection is expected to serve as a short-term support measure while the industry awaits recovery in key international markets and the upcoming mid-year holiday season.
Tourism stakeholders are also encouraging authorities and operators to strengthen promotion of the route and integrate it into broader travel packages to maximize its impact on the local hospitality sector.
