GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Bali Zoo has officially discontinued its elephant riding activities as of January 1, 2026, as part of a commitment to strengthening animal welfare standards and promoting responsible, sustainable conservation practices.
The decision was confirmed by Bali Zoo’s Head of Public Relations, Emma Chandra, who said the policy prioritizes the well-being of the elephants under the zoo’s care.
“Animal welfare is Bali Zoo’s top priority. This policy was implemented to support better elephant management and to ensure that care standards continue to improve,” Emma said in a statement on Thursday (January 15, 2026).
She explained that the move aligns with Circular Letter No. 6 of 2025 issued by the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), which calls for the discontinuation of elephant riding demonstrations at conservation institutions across Indonesia, following the Bali Conservation Agency (BKSDA) response on elephant welfare at tourist attractions.
According to Emma, Bali Zoo has also coordinated closely with the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Bali) regarding the implementation of the directive.
Ending elephant riding activities is intended to provide the animals with more time and space to express natural behaviors, engage in social interaction, and participate in care and enrichment programs designed to support their overall welfare.
“Going forward, Bali Zoo will continue to focus on daily elephant care, conservation education, and the development of visitor experiences centered on learning and respect for wildlife,” she added.
The zoo said the policy reflects a broader shift toward conservation-based tourism experiences that emphasize education and ethical animal management rather than animal performances.
