BADUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – Efforts to reduce chronic traffic congestion in Bali’s popular Canggu tourism area continue to face significant obstacles, with local authorities citing road infrastructure limitations as a major challenge.

Badung Transportation Agency (Dishub Badung) Head AA Ngurah Gde Rahmadi said plans for traffic engineering measures have been discussed extensively with Badung Police. However, the narrow road network and consistently high vehicle volumes across the area have complicated efforts to identify an effective solution.

“We have discussed several possible traffic engineering patterns with Badung Police. However, conditions on the ground remain challenging because roads throughout the Canggu area have similar widths and are all heavily used by vehicles,” Rahmadi said on Tuesday (9/6).

According to him, the situation makes it difficult to implement common traffic management strategies such as one-way systems or large-scale traffic diversions.

Many alternative routes that could potentially be used for redirected traffic are already operating near capacity, particularly during peak hours and periods of high tourist arrivals.

Canggu has become one of Bali’s busiest tourism and lifestyle destinations, attracting large numbers of visitors, residents, expatriates, and daily commuters, contributing to persistent traffic congestion across the area.

Despite the challenges, the Transportation Agency said it is continuing to evaluate various options together with relevant stakeholders to find solutions that can improve traffic flow without creating additional problems on surrounding roads.

“We continue working with all stakeholders to find the best formula. Congestion in Canggu cannot be ignored because the area is one of Bali’s busiest tourism centers,” Rahmadi said.

He emphasized that solving Canggu’s traffic issues requires cooperation between multiple government agencies, with police playing a key role in enforcing any future traffic regulations or road management schemes.

Officials are currently seeking both short-term and long-term solutions to reduce congestion, which has become one of the most frequently raised concerns among residents and visitors in Badung Regency.

“Coordination with the police is ongoing because they will be at the forefront of enforcing any traffic measures in the field. Meanwhile, our role is to prepare technical studies and support the implementation of any agreed traffic engineering plan,” he added.

Authorities confirmed that several discussions have already taken place regarding possible traffic management measures in Canggu. However, preliminary studies indicate that the available options remain limited due to the area’s existing road conditions.
