KLUNGKUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – Nusa Penida in Klungkung Regency is being proposed as an integrated “green island” destination focused on environmental sustainability and local values, according to a presentation delivered by Klungkung Regent I Made Satria on Monday (February 16, 2026).

The concept was outlined during a tourism dialogue and potential development presentation held at Seven Dreams Hotel. Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Bima Arya Sugiarto, attended the event and encouraged the Klungkung administration to further refine the green island framework as the long-term direction for Nusa Penida.

Bima described Nusa Penida as having strong potential as a sustainable tourism destination and referred to the area as a “hidden paradise” that remains relatively undeveloped.

“When I first came here, my main impression was that this is a hidden paradise that has not been fully touched,” Bima said on Monday.

He emphasized that the proposed green island strategy should be developed in a comprehensive and integrated manner, covering waste management, renewable energy, vehicle restrictions, and the strengthening of local culture.

“If I may suggest, this green island concept should be refined and fully integrated. From there, we can determine which aspects will be funded through loans, corporate support, CSR, or investors,” he stated.

Bima also expressed readiness to assist in strengthening the concept, including facilitating coordination across ministries. He highlighted the importance of strong collaboration among regional government agencies to ensure successful implementation.

According to Bima, the green island vision must be aligned with official spatial planning documents, including the Detailed Spatial Plan (RDTR), to ensure that sustainability objectives are formally embedded in local development policy.

Beyond infrastructure and environmental measures, he stressed the importance of social development and community character in supporting the initiative. A well-designed destination, he noted, must be accompanied by social readiness and community participation.

Bima also underlined the urgency of maintaining tourism momentum in Nusa Penida. He cautioned that without timely infrastructure improvements and ecosystem development, high visitor expectations could result in dissatisfaction.

“This is a momentum. If it is not maintained, it could be lost. I see growing enthusiasm, but if tourists come and are disappointed, they may not return,” he said.

The green island proposal is expected to guide future policy decisions as Klungkung Regency positions Nusa Penida as a sustainable tourism hub within Bali’s broader development strategy.
