GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – A United States national identified by the initials KAA was secured by Sukawati Police officers and local pecalang (traditional security personnel) after being found walking outside during Nyepi Day on Thursday (March 19, 2026).
The incident occurred on Jalan Raya Sukawati, where the man was seen walking from the northern direction during the island-wide silence observed as part of Nyepi, known locally as Catur Brata Penyepian. The day requires residents and visitors to remain indoors, avoid travel, and maintain quiet across Bali.
Gianyar Police spokesperson, Ipda Gusti Ngurah Suardita, confirmed that the individual was found violating these restrictions without a valid emergency reason. “It is true that Sukawati Police, together with pecalang, secured a foreign national with the initials KAA for violating Nyepi regulations by being outside without urgent necessity,” he said.
The tourist was then taken to Sukawati Police headquarters for questioning. During the initial process, communication was reportedly difficult as the individual appeared uncooperative and attempted to mislead officers by pretending to be unable to speak.
He also insisted on continuing his journey without a clear destination and initially refused officers’ instructions to stop and rest. However, after a persuasive and humane approach by officers on site, he eventually cooperated and began communicating normally.
According to police findings, the man stated that he was confused and searching for accommodation in the Sukawati area at the time of the incident.
“After a humane approach, he admitted he was looking for a place to stay. To maintain order and safety during Nyepi, officers assisted in taking him to a villa in Sukawati so he could rest,” Suardita added.
Authorities emphasized that Nyepi is a significant religious observance in Bali, and compliance is expected from both residents and visitors. The Gianyar Police urged all tourists to respect local customs and traditions to help maintain a safe and orderly environment.
For international visitors, Nyepi represents one of Bali’s most important cultural events, during which movement, outdoor activities, and noise are strictly limited across the island.
