DENPASAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Bali is preparing a new regulation that may prohibit foreign tourists from renting motorbikes, as part of a broader effort to improve safety and promote higher-quality tourism on the island.
The proposal was presented by Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta during a plenary session of the Bali Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) on Friday (April 24), in response to discussions on the draft regulation for “Quality Tourism Management.”
According to Giri Prasta, the proposed restriction is aimed at enhancing safety and comfort for visitors while reducing traffic violations that could lead to accidents.
“The recommendation is for tourists to use four-wheeled vehicles and official travel agencies to avoid traffic violations that may result in accidents,” he said.
The regulation is also expected to strengthen coordination between provincial and regency governments, ensuring better alignment in spatial planning policies across Bali.
In addition, authorities are considering stricter oversight of tourism businesses. Operators may be required to join official associations to improve monitoring and guidance within the industry.
The draft regulation also highlights broader sustainability measures, including stricter enforcement of single-use plastic bans and waste sorting at the source. These steps are seen as essential to maintaining Bali’s environmental standards amid growing tourism activity.
Giri Prasta further emphasized that the length of stay could serve as an indicator of “quality tourists,” as it is closely linked to visitor spending and financial capacity.
“Length of stay is related to spending and reflects the financial capability of tourists,” he added.
Officials noted that the regulation is still under discussion, with further refinement expected before implementation. The initiative reflects Bali’s ongoing shift toward a more controlled and sustainable tourism model that prioritizes safety, environmental responsibility, and higher economic impact.
