BADUNG, DEWATA.NEWS – Access to a popular cliffside viewpoint above Balangan Beach in South Kuta has been partially restricted following safety concerns, after a viral video showed barriers and security presence at the location.
The footage circulating online created the impression that the site had been fully closed. However, local authorities clarified that tourists are still allowed to access the cliff area on foot, provided they follow rules set by the private landowner.
Head of Cengiling Neighborhood, I Nyoman Sudita, confirmed on Tuesday (April 14) that the cliff area is privately owned by a company and not part of public or traditional village land.
“The land belongs to a private owner. Access to the beach itself is still open and not closed,” he explained.
According to Sudita, restrictions were introduced after a series of dangerous incidents involving foreign tourists. One widely shared video showed a tourist performing a risky stunt involving a motorbike near the edge of the cliff, raising safety concerns.
“That incident prompted the installation of a gate to prevent similar dangerous behavior,” he added.
On-site observations indicate that visitors can still reach Balangan Beach using nearby stairs, which remain accessible. The restrictions mainly apply to certain entry points on the clifftop area.
Local residents had previously raised concerns after being temporarily denied access, including for fishing activities. Following coordination between community leaders and local authorities on Monday (April 13) at around 10:00 WITA, access has since been reopened for residents with specific purposes.
“Local residents are now allowed to enter again, including for fishing. Tourists can also visit for photos or pre-wedding shoots, as long as they report to the on-site staff and state their purpose,” Sudita said.
Authorities emphasized that motor vehicles are not permitted to enter the cliff area. Visitors are required to park outside and continue on foot.
Kadek Alit Juwita, Head of Public Order at South Kuta Subdistrict, confirmed that officials had inspected the site and coordinated with security personnel.
“The access is not fully closed, but controlled. Visitors must clearly state their purpose before entering,” he said.
The lower area of Balangan Beach, including stair access, continues to be managed by local coastal communities, while the clifftop remains under private ownership.
Officials stated that the measures are intended to prevent further safety risks while maintaining limited access for both tourists and local residents.
