GIANYAR, DEWATA.NEWS – Authorities in Gianyar Regency have ordered the closure of a charcoal production business in Peliatan Village, Ubud, following complaints from residents about smoke pollution affecting the surrounding environment.

The mediation process was conducted by Gianyar’s Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) on Tuesday (26/5) at the Peliatan Village Office as part of efforts to maintain public comfort and environmental order in one of Bali’s major tourism areas.

The action followed reports from local residents who said smoke from the charcoal production activity had caused air pollution and disrupted nearby communities.

Head of Gianyar Satpol PP, Fire and Rescue Agency, Putu Yudanegara, said the mediation was carried out as a persuasive enforcement step under local regulations.

“Based on the discussion and field inspection results, it was agreed that the charcoal production business would officially cease operations. The business location is in a plantation zone that is not designated for charcoal production activities,” Yudanegara stated.

Authorities also noted concerns that the smoke pollution could negatively affect Ubud’s image as an international tourism destination known for its environmental and cultural appeal.

According to officials, the business owner agreed cooperatively to sign a formal statement committing to stop all charcoal production activities at the site.

The closure is expected to prevent further environmental pollution and help maintain air quality in the surrounding area.

Yudanegara added that the business owner acknowledged the activity did not comply with the applicable zoning regulations.

“Gianyar Regency remains open to business activities and investment, but all operations must comply with existing regulations so that comfort can be maintained for businesses, residents, and tourists alike,” he explained.

Authorities hope the agreement will immediately reduce the risk of smoke pollution while supporting a cleaner and healthier environment in Peliatan Village and the wider Ubud tourism area.

The mediation meeting was attended by representatives from the Indonesian military, Gianyar Police, the Gianyar District Attorney’s Office, Ubud district officials, local village authorities, customary community representatives, and the business owner.
